About the Organization and Opportunity
Organization: The mission of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island is to protect birds, other wildlife and their habitats through conservation, education and advocacy, for the benefit of people and all other life.
Audubon works throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts to provide high quality environmental education to schools, libraries and community organizations. In addition, Audubon's public programs serve people of all ages, providing opportunities to learn more about the natural world around them. The Nature Center & Aquarium, located in Bristol, RI, is open to the public and include exhibits on the local wildlife and habitats. Audubon's fourteen wildlife refuges have trails that are open free to the public for hiking, birding, photography and relaxation.
Opportunity:
Habitats (Grades 1 – 8) Students investigate different habitats and the creatures that live in them. They discover how these animals are connected through food chains and food webs, explore the basic needs that all animals have and meet a live animal.
Fur, Feathers, & Scales (Grades K – 2) Some animals are covered in fur, others in feathers, skin, or scales. Students compare and contrast the characteristics and adaptations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. A live animal will accompany this program.
Owls of Rhode Island (Grades 3 – 8) Students learn about the owls that live in Rhode Island, including their habitats, diet, senses, structures and functions. They will have the opportunity to test their skills as owl detectives by using clues to gather identifying information and learn fun facts about the owls found in our state. A live owl will accompany this program.
Whale CSI (Grades 6 – 12) Students take a deep dive and learn all about whales! They will discover how whales and dolphins are classified, and explore whale biology and anatomy. Students will also have the opportunity to perform a mock necropsy on the large-scale whale model in our aquarium.
