About the Organization and Opportunity
Organization: Our mission is to protect and improve Narragansett Bay. Our vision is a fully swimmable, fishable, healthy Narragansett Bay, accessible to all. Save The Bay is an independent, member-supported, nonprofit organization. We got our start as a grassroots organization in 1970, when a small group of concerned citizens came together to fight an oil refinery proposed for the shores of Tiverton. Their work began our legacy as the eyes, ears and voice for Narragansett Bay. Today we carry out our mission through three areas of work: advocacy, education, and habitat restoration and adaptation.
Opportunity: Save The Bay Aquarium volunteers are stationed at the Hamilton Family Aquarium in Newport, RI. Three different roles are offered: educator – engage with guests at touch tanks and exhibits; aquarist – assist the husbandry team with animal care; and gift shop – welcome guests and sell merchandise at the front desk. The commitment is typically one half-day shift per week for a period of four months. There are three cycles per year that run October 1-Jan 31, Feb 1-May 31, and June 1-Sept 30 (student summer break option available). Applications open two months in advance of the start date.
